Go to Google and type in a word, any word, lets take ‘golf’ as an example. Then look up in the right corner of your screen just above the sponsored links. You’ll see a line that reads ‘Results 1 – 10 of about 306,000,000 for golf’. What does the big number mean? That’s how many web pages use the word that you entered into the Google search box.
It’s a big number, isn’t it? That’s because there are a lot of people talking about ‘golf’. But are all of them competitors? Probably not.
Technically speaking, all 306 million web pages are competitors. They are competing for the same top spots at Google. But they aren’t all competitors in a real sense. Some of those web pages are news stories from a year ago. Others are web pages for e-commerce sites that sell golf clubs. If I don’t sell golf clubs then those sites aren’t competitors. But you can bet that a certain percentage of that 306 million are real competitors. The question is, how many?
